Eligibility for Appointment
as a Legal Service Officer
You
may apply for possible appointment as a Legal Service Officer:
(a) at the entry grade if you have obtained at least a
Second Class Upper Honours Bachelor of Laws degree (or the equivalent)
from the NUS, the SMU or a Scheduled University and you are
a "qualified person" as defined in the Legal Profession
Act, Cap 161 / the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules; or
(b) at a higher
grade as a "mid-career" officer if you have
obtained at least a Second Class Lower Honours Bachelor of
Laws degree (or the equivalent) from the NUS, the SMU or a Scheduled
University and have at least 5 years of strong relevant
legal experience that may be useful to the Legal Service and
you are a "qualified person" as defined in the Legal Profession
Act, Cap 161 / the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules.
Salary & Progression
The
Legal Service offers a competitive remuneration package. Salaries
are benchmarked against the incomes of lawyers in private law firms
and adjusted annually. There are also abundant opportunities for
career advancement in the Legal Service for those with excellent
performance and high potential. Progression is based on merit.
Successful candidates will be appointed on 18-month contracts (for
fresh graduates) or 2-year contracts (for mid-career officers).
Seniority of appointment and commencing salary will depend on qualifications
and practical legal experience.
Fresh law graduates will be appointed at Legal Service Officer Grade
6B. The current gross monthly salary is not less than $3,094.82
(for those who have not served NS) and $3,760.21 (for those who
have completed full-time NS of 2 years 6 months).
Candidates with strong relevant legal experience or who are appointed
as "mid-career" officers may have their experience recognised
and be eligible for additional increments/appointment at a higher
grade.

Career
Development
The
Legal Service has in place a personnel management system which facilitates
the development of your potential to the fullest. You will be scheduled
for rotation to various departments to gain exposure to a variety
of legal work, which can be broadly categorised into advice, advocacy
and adjudication. You will also have the opportunity to sharpen
your analytical skills and augment your knowledge of the law through
local and overseas training courses. Outstanding officers may also
be considered for postgraduate scholarships and training awards
to pursue postgraduate programmes in law at the NUS or premier overseas
universities.
