Appointments in the Legal Service

 

Eligibility for Appointment as a Legal Service Officer

You may at any time of the year, apply for possible appointment as a Legal Service Officer:

(a) at the entry grade if you have obtained at least a Second Class Upper Honours Bachelor of Laws degree (or the equivalent) from the NUS, the SMU or a Scheduled University and you are a "qualified person" as defined in the Legal Profession Act, Cap 161 / the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules; or

(b) at a higher grade as a "mid-career" officer if you have obtained at least a Second Class Lower Honours Bachelor of Laws degree (or the equivalent) from the NUS, the SMU or a Scheduled University and have at least 5 years of strong relevant legal experience that may be useful to the Legal Service and you are a "qualified person" as defined in the Legal Profession Act, Cap 161 / the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules.

Fresh graduates (and those with less than 5 years) with a Class 2.2 (or the equivalent) who are very keen in a career in the Legal Service may be considered for appointment. The applicant must provide strong reasons on why he / she should be considered as an exception. A write-up (and relevant testimonials, where applicable) should be furnished. All such applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Undergraduates who have completed their second year are also encouraged to apply for possible appointment as an LSO. Those selected will be immediately offered appointment in the Legal Service. The confirmation of the offer of appointment will be subject to their being awarded at least a Class 2.1 (or the equivalent). Those who apply and are offered appointment prior to their graduation but are thereafter awarded a Class 2.2 (or the equivalent) will be specially considered for the confirmation of the offer of appointment.

Salary & Progression

The Legal Service offers a competitive remuneration package. Salaries are benchmarked against the incomes of lawyers in private law firms and adjusted annually. There are also abundant opportunities for career advancement in the Legal Service for those with excellent performance and high potential. Progression is based on merit.

Successful candidates will be appointed on 18-month contracts (for fresh graduates) or 2-year contracts (for mid-career officers). Seniority of appointment and commencing salary will depend on qualifications and practical legal experience.

Fresh law graduates will be appointed at Legal Service Officer Grade 6B. The current gross monthly salary is not less than $3,094.82 (for those who have not served NS) and $3,660.39 (for those who have completed full-time NS of 2 years 6 months).

Candidates with strong relevant legal experience or who are appointed as "mid-career" officers may have their experience recognised and be eligible for additional increments/appointment at a higher grade.

Career Development

T
he Legal Service has in place a personnel management system which facilitates the development of your potential to the fullest. You will be scheduled for rotation to various departments to gain exposure to a variety of legal work, which can be broadly categorised into advice, advocacy and adjudication. You will also have the opportunity to sharpen your analytical skills and augment your knowledge of the law through local and overseas training courses. Outstanding officers may also be considered for postgraduate scholarships and training awards to pursue postgraduate programmes in law at the NUS or premier overseas universities.

Appointment Interviews
Interviews are held regularly. The next set of interviews is scheduled on 30 Jul 2010. The following sets of interviews for 2010 will, subject to availability of candidates and vacancies, be scheduled monthly (if necessary) from Aug to Nov 2010. Appointments in the Legal Service Commission Secretariat


The Legal Service Commission (“LSC”) is the appointing authority for all Legal Service Officers in the Singapore Legal Service. The LSC Secretariat supports the functions of the LSC and is the policy human resource arm for the Singapore Legal Service.

We invite experienced candidates to join our team as Management Executives.

A) Management Executive (Compensation)

Your responsibilities will include:
• salary surveys & benchmarking;
• remuneration framework reviews;
• budgeting;
• implementation & enhancements to remuneration framework; &
• annual appraisal / compensation exercise.

B) Management Executive (Recruitment)

Your responsibilities will include:
• recruitment and establishment;
• outreach programmes (local and overseas);
• management of scholars;
• review of recruitment and appointment framework; &
• exit management

Requirements

for Positions A & B:
• A Degree from a recognised university.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in HR.
• A strong command of written and spoken English.
• Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident.
